CornerPressure - AE2012/UMVC3 Player of the Year pt.1

The guys at Cornerpressure are going to put up their picks for Player of the Year for both AE2012 and UMVC3 later on tonight. Glenn did it last year, and I currently can not remember who won but the fact of the matter is for some reason these things stir up quite a bit of talk in the community. Which is great because other top players who may feel like they should have been mentioned (or even won) just might step their game up and bring it for the next season. So, lets get into it with my first pick.

UMVC3 this year was a bit of a roller coaster for a lot of players, but out of the pack one person really stayed on top and just took over the entire east coast, AGE NYChris G

If you hate on his style of play, you must have not been paying attention to him at all. Since Chris’s breakout performances on the east coast during vanilla MVC3, he has been on the scene and hitting up almost every local and major on the east coast. But it was changes in UMVC3 that really boosted this already rising star up the ranks to where he is now. Chris G found Morrigan (as a joke character) and quickly realized just how good she was (along with Dieminion), once he added Doom to the team it was a wrap. Ever since then Chris G has taken almost every East coast major and even went undefeated at Big TWO (NYC Next Level) for over 10 weeks straight. Now mind you he has even went for consecutive wins at 8 on the Break and these tournaments aren’t full of scrubs either, he has to play some of the best that Maryland, Jersey, and NEW YORK as to offer. Even to the point when some of the best (and a few legends) were even COMPLAINING on how good his team was!

3 swords... Everybody is free.

UMVC3 may be his main game, but I didn’t really pick Chris G because of his performance in UMVC3. At Civil War 4 Chris G won three tournaments coming from LOSERS. Now if that doesn’t remind you of Justin Wong in his prime, I can’t tell you what will. This guy can not only dominate in UMVC3, but he is pretty solid at a high level in several other games oftentimes getting Top 8 in anything he enters. If Chris G had won EVO2k12 (which he got 3rd place in) that would have solidified him for getting player of the year, but his track record proves it enough.

Honorable Mentions

Complexity Filipino Champ

I can hear the boo’s already. Don’t hate on this players hard work though. I have watched Filipino Champ’s stream (before the FGTV) and witnessed how HUNGRY he was to become a real Champ after EVO2k11. He was in the lab all the time. He was playing the best of the best, and even helped stepped up NorCal’s level of skill with the introduction of Fraud Free Friday’s at the FGTV house. All his hard work paid off ten fold as he went to become the EVO2K12 Champion. I can’t really think of any real legit reasons why I didn’t pick him, he dominated on the west coast just as much as Chris G did and even traveled a lot. But it really came down to just the East Coast reaction to Chris G, they crowned him the best. His fierce competition just had no answer for him. Total toss up.

AGE Fanatiq

Two AGE members on my list? Biased!? Just kidding, let’s talk about this guy right here, AGE Fanatiq. We should just call him, Mr. Money in the Bank because this man brought back the hype of high stakes money matches in UMVC3. No one wanted to do $5,000+ money matches in UMVC3. The game was too random. Fanatiq had the confidence in himself and his skills to put up the big bucks and put it on the main stage for the world to see by accepting challenges from MH RayRay and Canada’s Joker and defeating them. Almost humiliating them at the same time. After destroying Ray Ray in the FT15 money match, he goes on to win ECT.

I will post part 2 in a little bit. Thanks for reading!
